Yarraville Glory Football Club is thrilled to announce the appointment of George Mells as Technical Director for its junior programs. This exciting addition to the club’s coaching leadership team reflects Yarraville Glory’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent and building structured pathways for players and coaches.
George brings a vast amount of experience from domestic and international football teams. He joins current grassroots coordinator, James Golding, who continues in this vital role as well as coach for the Under 10 Boys Kangas team.
Experience
Born in Melbourne, George’s football journey began early and took him overseas to some of the world’s most elite and iconic academies. He spent his formative years at Chelsea FC and Southampton FC, developing and learning from highly regarded youth systems known for producing world-class talent. Reflecting on his time overseas, George says:
“Playing for Chelsea, I learned how to become a winner.”
He later returned to Australia to play professionally in the A-League with Adelaide United, where he was part of the club’s 2016 Premiership and Championship-winning squad. George has also played in the National Premier Leagues Victoria with Port Melbourne, Avondale and South Melbourne FC, playing a pivotal role in highly successful seasons.
Mells Football Academy
In 2024, George founded Mells Football Academy, a development program designed to share the knowledge and training he gained from professional football career and his time in Europe. The academy focuses on four key pillars: technical skill, tactical understanding, physical conditioning, and mental resilience. These are all values George says he hopes to instill in players at Yarraville Glory.
George is passionate about helping young players reach their potential and believes in the long-term impact of strong foundational coaching.
“If I can give even a fraction of what I have learned overseas to the kids, then I would’ve done my job well and truly,” he says.
Thank You, James Golding
We want to recognise and sincerely thank James Golding for his outstanding work and ongoing commitment to the club.
James has been a key figure in building and growing our junior program, serving as Technical Director for our juniors, Grassroots Coordintor and coach of the Under 10 Boys Kangas team.
His amazing efforts at every training session - and behind the scenes - have helped to build a strong foundation for Yarraville Glory’s junior teams.
James has fostered a supportive and inclusive environment where kids feel confident, valued and excited to play.
His leadership has been instrumental in our success, and we are so pleased that he will continue in his roles as Grassroots Coordinator and U10 Kangas coach alongside George as we enter this exciting new phase.
Thank you, James, for everything you continue to do for our club. We truly appreciate you.
A New Chapter
George’s appointment at Yarraville Glory, alongside James and our valued coaching team, reflects the club’s ongoing commitment to creating supported pathways from grassroots to senior football.
With his outstanding professional background, the Yarraville Glory Football Club believes George’s leadership and experience, combined with our existing talent, will take our junior program to the next level.
